What Did You Do Today?

May 2nd, 2012

Whatever it was, I bet it wasn’t as cool as this:

I know it’s supposed to be Sun Running week but fck it, that video is too good not to share today.

A Little Bird Told Me

May 1st, 2012

…that anytime you see a guy walking down the street wearing a old school neon Nike backpack with a bird on his shoulder that image MUST be the lead story of the day on SunSkier:

OK, glad we got that taken care of. Technically it is still Sun Running week here at SunSkier, it’s just pretty tough to follow up a guy walking down the street wearing a old school neon Nike backpack with a bird on his shoulder so we’ll just include another ’seen on the streets’ pic of a sun runner we saw yesterday - maybe tomorrow will be the day of the sun running extravaganza we’re really planning on.

Sun Running Week Kick Off

April 30th, 2012

In honor of the SkiEO’s participation in The Relay this upcoming weekend we are dubbing this week Sun Running Week. Hopefully we should be able to find some quality content throughout the week, but given that it’s getting late this evening all I have for you at the moment is this guy:

Check back tomorrow for something that is hopefully a bit more worth your time. In the meantime, get out there and have fun jogging (remember, the ‘j’ is silent).

The Story of Skip

April 24th, 2012

On the heels of Powdertron’s awesome collection of pics from the end of Vail’s season comes a submission from a fellow member of the SkiEO’s O.G. crew - Kasper the Non-Jake Ghost recommended the video below as being worthy of SunSkier. Kasper, I couldn’t agree more - there is nothing jake about this video. Make sure you stick around for the last 60 seconds to find a treat sweeter than mango lassi from a street merchant Mumbai:

Powdertron Shuts Down Vail

April 23rd, 2012

It’s that time of years - pond skimming, early apres, 60+ degree days. The end of the ski season is upon us. And while many of us have packed away our gear for the season, the SkiEO included, there are a few people who really know how to shut it down right. Those people are the crazy kids at Vail, and the season ain’t over until they say it is. Well last weekend, despite a massive, extremely late season dump, it was time to stop the lifts from turning. But before they did that there was one last massive shinding out at the top of Mountain Top lift. New contributor Powdertron was there to take in the sights - professionally of course. Enjoy his work:

Wear Your Sunscreen

April 18th, 2012

Can you believe there are still people out there who think that they aren’t going to get burnt on a sunny spring day on the slopes?? It blows my mind. Always, always wear your sunscreen out there - she does it, shouldn’t you…?

And just because it’s such a ridiculous outfit, here’s another ski bunny for you:

Feasting on Leftovers

April 17th, 2012

What a weird season this has been. After very little snow November through February, March & April blessed the Tahoe basin with 15+ feet of goodness. The SkiEO was lucky enough to catch several tasty powder days over the last 6 weeks, as you might have read about in prior posts, and this past Saturday was probably the last of them. The drive up early Saturday morning was one of the fastest on record - 2 hrs, 50 minutes garage-to-parking lot at Sierra at Tahoe. What I found there was the best powder leftovers I have ever experienced. Clearly Friday was The Day - for those that were lucky enough to be on the mountain on Friday it’s unlikely they touched another track all day. For the rest of us, we had to wait until Saturday to dig in. However, something funny happened - the weekend powder hounds were nowhere to be found. There were powder stashes that make the mouth water just available for the taking all day long. I don’t know if it’s because people have mentally shut off for the season or they didn’t think it would be as good as it was but I wasn’t complaining, every snow rider dreams of conditions like that with limited interest from others.

Of course, it being Spring Skiing, there was still the regular collection of clowns, boobs (literally), and sun skiers on the slopes:

As with all the best days I was too busy enjoying it to properly document it in pictures - you just had to be there. Sunday at Heavenly was a bit of a different story. The powder hounds had gotten their claws into the fresh snow and the sun had done it’s work, so the conditions by then had drifted well into mediocre territory. I did a few runs before hitting North Bowl, always one of the most reliable snow stashes on the mountain. It didn’t disappoint (in relative terms - it still couldn’t compare to anything from Saturday) and I found out at the end of the run one of the reasons why - the lift you take up from it, as well as the entire Boulder base area, was closed for the season:

“No problem!” I thought, “I can hike over the ridge to a lift that I know is running!” That’s when I popped off my binding - literally:

The Snow Gods had spoken, and their message was ‘Quit while you’re ahead’. I took heed, and began the hike down to the base, unsure of how I would actually get back to my car from there.

Luckily, there was a Heavenly bus that made a lap through the parking lot every 30 minutes or so. Unluckily, the Heavenly bus is one of the slowest ways to travel known to man, so it was close to an hour before I was back at my car. Perhaps their slowness has something to do with their fondness for safety…

So, if Saturday was my last full day of the season, I have to say it ended on quite a high note. I won’t look back on the overall 2011-12 season with great fondness but I will remember the great storms of the last two months.

Thank You For Being a Friend

April 16th, 2012

That iconic theme song goes out to Sparky, who was kind enough to snap this photo of the cover of Season 7 of the Golden Girls he found for sale, but not good enough of a friend to actually buy it for the SkiEO. So I guess the card attached might say something like ‘thank you for being someone I think about from time to time but not someone I would ever actually get something special for’. What a jerk.
